The more water you drink, the less of a chore it becomes. In fact your body starts to crave it as it learns to recognize when you are dehydrated.
Which is kind of by way of saying yes, water can be boring, but you get used to it. I actually really like plain water but I know not everyone does, so I'll show you some simple ways to boost your intake.
But first, let me explain why it's important to have that 2.5 liters. We know from research that this is what the body needs to…

People don't realize that germs don't go on vacation during the summer months. If anything, people need to be even more vigilant about maintaining a clean, healthy home and taking basic summer safety precautions.
Simple safety tips to play it safe this season.
Kill unwelcome guests: bacteria. More people become ill from food-borne bacteria during the summer season than at any other time of the year. One way of getting sick is through cross contamination - or the accidental…

(It seems just as important as finding a new job now is protecting the job once you get it. Take a few moments to read this.)
The chief executives of trusts and private companies may consider “red lining” through many a group of nurses just to save costs. As the biggest workforce in the healthcare community, nursing salaries are undoubtedly flashing brightly on the budget sheets. But it is wrong to just slash and burn this cost, because it is nurses who have one of the…

(This was a very interesting article I found while looking for news updates for nurses, and I felt it would be a good read possibly worth discussing amongst our RN2RN members. Please feel free to respond!)
Good Grief: Nurses Cope With Patient Deaths
Rowena Orosco, RN, BSN, had been working at Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore for three years when a family with seven children was brought to the hospital after a fire destroyed their…

I just read my last post - the one about it being a month in the O.R. as a new RN. Wow. What I "re-read" is probably something that comes from every new O.R. nurse whether they are an experienced RN or not :) I am training a few myself now!
My anxieties about the O.R. were all typical, just like I said above. The only thing that was a challenge for me and maybe not the other RNs (that my bosses "helped" me with) was my hesitation to just jump in and take charge. I…

I will never forget the day we dealt with a little boy who ended up in our emergency room. He was in dire straits, and it was apparent from the start just how quickly life was slipping away from him.
We were enjoying a quiet day. It wasn't…

Just wanted to give an update on my career goals. Right now I am in my second year of nursing. I am on winter break and will be heading back Jan 17, 2011. Whew I will say that this semester has not been so bad, as i just finished with Pathophysiology, alot of work. The start of my second semester will begin with my med-surg clinical. I guess you can say that I am looking forward to it, but I hear its pretty tuff. At least 10 people a semester fail that clinical. Along with that I will also…

I just started out working as an RN a month ago. I cried for the first time today....
I had a good day up until the end of my shift. When the oncoming nurse and myself counted the narcotics on my cart, I had one oxycodone missing. Can't figure out what happened to it and I know I didn't give the patient one today. I know it's only one, but the thought of it looking like I took it really bothers me. I don't know if I will get in trouble or…

I have spent the majority of my nursing career as a Critical Care nurse and am now sharing that time in Cardiac and Pulmonary Health services. I am nearing the end of obtaining my BSN through University of Phoenix and am at a crossroads as to my next move. I would like to pursue Clinical Nurse Specialist with critical care focus but the program is very expensive and would like some advise on how to approach my current employer about tuition reimbursement in return for…

To a patient, it may look like a nurse is touching a wrist, changing a bandage, reading a chart and asking random questions. What she’s also doing is thinking.
That nurse is assessing, listening, gathering information, prioritizing and planning the next action — all within minutes — often without being aware of all that she’s doing.
Critical thinking is at the heart of being a good nurse.
“You start with the guidelines and theory that you know, and you build…
