2009 Grads are worried

Every '09 grad or soon-to-be grad that I talk to is worried about their chances of getting a job. It seems that because so many people are losing their jobs and their health insurance, few people are going to the hospital unless they really have to. I know that at least one hospital in my area has actually laid some staff off and every hospital is cutting back on some of the hours of its staff members. Just about everyone thought that nursing was recession proof. Unfortunately, this recession… Continue

The happiest place in the hospital

Well,

Not really the last rotation. It's the last one until next fall semester. I must admit, I'm a bit tired. Maternity isn't a really suited for me and I really don't think I'll ever get into maternity nursing, so I just feel like I've got really low excitement about this one. At least it's spring and it really is one of the happiest places in the hospital. Perhaps just knowing that will perk me up a bit. This spring break hasn't really helped though. Now that I've taken this week long… Continue

CNA/NNOC & SEIU Joining forces?

Please check out the website below. For all nurses, this is a big deal. CNA/NNOC & SEIU have been fighting each other for membership for a long time.
Keeping a strong union for nurses is important for advocating for better working conditions and for the patients that we help.

Nursing shortage over?? Probably not -Timing it right

Last blog post I asked if the nursing shortage was over because very few hospitals in my area are hiring - especially new grads. I think now that the shortage isn't completely over, but that we are seeing a delay in people coming in to take care of their own health. According to the AP "The U.S. unemployment rate hit 8.1 percent in February, a 25-year peak. The nation has lost 4.4 million jobs since the recession began in late 2007." This means that there are a lot of people who have lost the… Continue

Is the nursing shortage over???

For the last 5 years I've heard about this great nursing shortage that we'll be having in 2010 and it will just get worse 5 years further down the line in 2015. But this morning, I heard on the radio that in SF, California (where I live) the nursing shortage is already over. That really doesn't bode well for me since I hope to graduate in 2010.

Just 5 years ago, many of the hospitals were hiring like mad and even letting a few new grads into ED and ICU in units when they never have done so… Continue

Sashi, I'm glad you did the research - I later reached much of the same conclusion that there will be a rebound effect from all of the hiring freezes. I really hope that it hits my year and that I can ride that tidal wave. If it doesn't…

Hi Bryan - I've been researching the economic impact of the recession on the nursing shortage in each state for the past few weeks in order to present an honest situation report for my website (http://rndegrees.net), and the general situation…

Even if you dont get a CNA job try to apply for patient care tech, receptionist or unit secretary work. It is a "foot in the door". Glad to hear your'e gonna stick to nursing. Best wishes to you.

Great advice - There's only one thing that is important and that is graduating and THEN the NCLEX. Over the summer I'm taking the test for becoming a CNA, and if I don't get a job, then I just don't get a summer job as a CNA.…

For Bryan & the Nursing Class of 2009 The best advice I can give as a "middle of the road" nurse (no longer the new grad but less than 5 years RN experience ) is to concentrate your focus on the day at hand. You need to absolutely keep…

Before I starte dnursing school all I could talk about was how I wanted to become a midwife. After spending 5 weeks in Maternity, NO WAY! The smell, the wait, and the boreness. I fell asleep waiting for a baby to be born. I was there April 1st last…
