Nursing and the economy

I am Bernie McPherson, RN, and I am curious about a couple of matters.(1) How long can the strength of the job market for nursing last with soaring healthcare costs, decreasing reimbursement rates, and no federal dollars to bail us out?(2) How else do you predict the US’s current economic state will impact the future of nursing?I invite feedback from our students, other faculty and nurses in practice.See More

How has technology affected nursing education?

Or, we could ask, to what extent do you believe that technology-supported distance education programs changed nursing education for the 21st century?

I became an RN to give help and hope - Bernie McPherson, RNC

I joined the Army some years ago, and was a medic. I was a field medic, so I saw the results of horrible trauma. I knew I could do something to help the wounded soldiers. I saw duty in Ft. Dix, NJ, Ft. Rucker, AL, Panama, Germany and . . . other places. I recall one wounded soldier who was only shot in his foot, but we knew his circulation was compromised: we called the "Dustoff" helpcopter (the Army Medevac name for it), and sent him on his way. He was in stable condition, we thought from his… Continue

Hi Bernie! Nice to meet you. I am a staff nurse in the MICU/CICU at the Va here in Ohio. I am currently a member of the education committee at the Va. We assist in developing education programs for nurses in the Va systems. Personally, I developed a crash cart program for the nurses on the medicine floors. Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with. My previous career was graphic design so that helps me tremendously with education programs and material. My interest in research is related to bullying behaviors in nursing. Conflict resolution skills is always an important skill to teach nurses, but especially new nurses.

Hello again!
I return to work tomorrow. I will locate some information on the topics you focus on (diabetes, etc.).

Whenever I have a student working with me I give them a quick overview of personality traits that their veteran patient may possess. For example a WWII vet's personality and experiences (PTSD, collegiality, tend to be more stoic) are very different from a Vietnam vet (PTSD, drugs, hepatitis from exposure to blood and IV drug abuse, mistrust) or OIF/OEF vet (PTSD, traumatic brain injury, drugs, suicide). I believe it is important that the student understands that each vet encountered a different kind of wartime and their coping mechanisms shape their current mentality. I believe it helps in their care be more effective and holistic.

I'll catch up with you later in the week!
