California’s nursing shortage could be reduced if the governor signs a bill to allow the California State University system to offer a doctorate in nursing.
The measure has been working its way through the Legislature for a year, and finally was approved by the Senate on Tuesday.
Over the next 10 years, the nursing shortage in California is expected to hit 116,000, and that is a huge threat to the quality of health care.
Nurses are at the heart of modern medicine, and the syste

A GLUT of graduates has thinned out chances of employment for the country’s nurses, the owner of one of Cebu’s leading medical schools said yesterday.
Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal Jr., owner and president of Cebu Doctor’s University, said nursing schools should hire or help their nurses find employment in hospitals.
He said CDU would ensure employment for the 448 graduates who passed in the recent nursing exams.
He said CDU is ranked 16th in the country with a national pa

While short-term the nursing shortage appears to have eased, looks are deceiving, says Hoban. “Long-term, we’re still expecting a shortage for years to come.”
For years now, we’ve been hearing about the nursing shortage in this country. Is that still the case? On the whole, yes, say nurse recruiters throughout the Washington metropolitan area, though there has been a
temporary “blip” as a result of the recession.
“The economy has certainly had an impact on the job market for n

Nurses, have you ever been hired into a new position in which it was difficult for you to delegate? Not because the unlicensed personnel were incapable of handling the allotted tasks, but because the nurses who have worked there for years allowed the unlicensed personnel to do the minimum required. How did you deal with this situation? Did you refer to The Nurse Practice Act or a similar document for

No matter how many nurses walk through Michael Fazio’s door looking for jobs, it’s never enough.
Despite a U.S. unemployment rate approaching 10 percent, Fazio’s Manhattan-based company, Prime Staffing, which specializes in placing New York-based nurses, has such an extraordinary demand for nurses that
it can’t fill all of the vacancies.
“We’re trying to engage nurses from around the country to come to New York and work for Prime Staffing,” said Fazio, the company’s president.

Today marks my 5th anniversary as a hospice nurse.
I’d worked on various units in several hospitals in my 30-year career, and while I loved the work I did every day, I felt a strong desire to do “something more.” To be closer to my patient…to interact
more with the family. I became a hospice nurse, and I discovered a new
level of commitment and an unexpected joy in doing work that is so
important.
My typical day starts by getting organized: participating in the Morning Call whe

How is the nation’s weak job market affecting new college graduates (those who graduated in 2010)?
Are you working in your chosen field? Are you taking jobs just to pay the bills or are they holding out for a job
where you can put your degree to work?
Or, as Monty Python puts it, are you doing something completely different, like a road trip, volunteering or taking
an internship?
